Description

The 1877 (S) Trade Dollar is a dollar produced at the San Francisco Mint as part of the Trade Dollars 1873-1885 series. The U.S. Mint produced 9.5 million examples, making this the highest mintage among 5 variants, accounting for 50% of the year's production. The obverse features Liberty seated facing left, holding an olive branch extended to the viewer, with a sheaf of wheat behind and the reverse displays an eagle perched on a bale of goods, with an olive branch and three arrows. The 1877-S with a mintage of over 9.5 million is the highest-production Trade Dollar and the most available date for type collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value ranges from $243 to $1.9K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 27.2 grams, 38.1 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7046.
