Description
This white metal medal cataloged as GW-898, struck from the second obverse die, commemorates the Battle of Fort Washington, produced circa 1876. This is a variant of the Fort Washington battle medal in the centennial series, using the second-generation obverse die paired with white metal composition. The fall of Fort Washington in November 1776 was among the Revolution's most painful episodes, and medals commemorating the battle served as reminders that American independence was purchased through suffering and sacrifice as well as victory. The second obverse die indicates this was produced later in the centennial period or as a replacement for the original die. White metal Fort Washington medals were affordable centennial souvenirs that brought the story of the Revolution's darkest hours to a broad audience. The GW-898 catalog number distinguishes this from the bronzed white metal GW-890 (PCGS #827253).
