Description
This bronze medal, cataloged as Baker-53 and GW-181, commemorates the Declaration of Independence, produced circa 1851. The medal pairs a Washington portrait with imagery or inscriptions relating to the signing of the Declaration on July 4, 1776, linking Washington's military leadership with the political act that justified the Revolution. While Washington was not present at the signing — he was commanding the Continental Army in New York — his role as the military leader who made independence a reality rather than merely a declaration makes the association entirely appropriate. The circa 1851 date places this medal near the seventy-fifth anniversary of the Declaration, a period when Americans were increasingly aware of the approaching centennial and beginning to produce commemorative material celebrating the founding era. Bronze was the standard composition for quality commemorative medals at mid-century, and Baker-53 represents a well-documented variety in the Washington medal canon. The dual catalog numbers (Baker-53 and GW-181) reflect the piece's importance in both the original Baker reference and the expanded Musante-Baker revision.
Rarity Notes
