Description

This silver medalet cataloged as GW-470 depicts the Liberty Bell, produced circa 1876 during the centennial celebration. The medalet format combined with the silver composition creates a small but precious commemorative that was intended as a jewelry piece, fob, or premium souvenir. The Liberty Bell was ubiquitous in centennial imagery, appearing on medals, tokens, and souvenirs of every description, but silver versions were produced in much smaller quantities than base metal pieces. This medalet's combination of the Liberty Bell and Washington imagery in precious metal places it among the more desirable centennial souvenirs for collectors who seek quality over size. The small format made this practical for personal wear or carry as a pocket piece, and silver medalets were sometimes mounted in bezels or frames for use as pendants. The GW-470 catalog number distinguishes this from the larger GW-469 Liberty Bell medal (PCGS #787410).
