Description
The 1876 (S) Trade Dollar is a dollar produced at the San Francisco Mint as part of the Trade Dollars 1873-1885 series. The U.S. Mint produced 5.2 million examples, making this the highest mintage among 3 variants, accounting for 84% of the year's production. The obverse features Liberty seated facing left, holding an olive branch extended to the viewer, with a sheaf of wheat behind and the reverse displays an eagle perched on a bale of goods, with an olive branch and three arrows. Congress revoked the Trade Dollar's legal tender status for domestic transactions, stranding millions of coins in American circulation at below face value. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value ranges from $243 to $3.4K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 27.2 grams, 38.1 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
