Description

Proof three dollar pattern struck in 1876, the Centennial year, as the Philadelphia Exposition showcased American innovation and the Mint continued extensive goloid alloy experiments for metric-weight coinage. This proof striking in gold is part of the three-dollar gold piece design studies for this unusual denomination introduced in 1854 conducted at the Philadelphia Mint under Chief Engraver William Barber.
