Proof eagle pattern struck in 1876, the Centennial year, as the Philadelphia Exposition showcased American innovation and the Mint continued extensive goloid alloy experiments for metric-weight coinage. This proof striking in gold is part of the eagle ($10) gold denomination design studies conducted at the Philadelphia Mint under Chief Engraver William Barber.
