Description

A ring of mounted and marching soldiers, cavalry and infantry, borders the Washington side of HK-76, a white metal Declaration of Independence medal of the 1876 Centennial, listed by Baker as 388B. George Hampden Lovett engraved that side, signing it in tiny letters on the truncation of Washington's bare bust; the legend marks the hundredth anniversary of the Declaration, with an odd "100dth" in the spelling. The obverse, by Abraham Demarest and signed by him at the bottom, reproduces John Trumbull's painting of the Committee of Five presenting its draft, the heads facing out. Bronze (HK-75), silver (HK-75a) and pewter (HK-77) strikings share both dies. Lovett, of New York City, also issued the eight battle medals of 1776 listed as HK-90 to HK-113. White metal, 43 mm.
