Description

HK-44 is the gilt striking, Baker 394A, of the Centennial dollar that pairs a "Birth Place of American Independence" view of Independence Hall with a bust of Washington. The hall side reads that phrase around the building and gives "Independence / 1776" below it. Washington appears unclothed at the shoulders, facing right, with "General Washington" around and 1776 underneath. Hibler and Kappen list the medal with the 1876 Centennial pieces and record it also in silver (HK-42), copper (HK-43) and white metal (HK-45). The same Washington die was used on the Liberty Seated, Centennial Fountain and American Colonies dollars of the same year, so the bust ties together several Philadelphia issues. The hall die's wording, calling the building the birthplace of independence, distinguishes this group from Key's Independence Hall pieces. Gilt, 38 mm.
