Description

On June 28, 1776, the fort on Sullivan's Island guarding Charleston, South Carolina, held off an attack by a British fleet, and Lovett made that battle the second medal of his Centennial set. HK-94 is the bronze striking, Baker 441A. Its reverse reads "Battle of Sullivan's Island / June 28" above a rayed center bearing 1776, with "2 / So. Carolina" below, inside the oak-leaf wreath used throughout the series. The obverse is Lovett's Washington, bare-shouldered and facing right within a circle of thirty-four stars, with "The centennial year of our national independence" and 1876 around it. Lovett, working in New York City, sold the eight battles as a set in three metals. The silver is HK-93 and the white metal HK-95. Bronze, 34 mm.
