1875 So-Called Dollar HK-1004, Battle of Lexington
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Gold was the costliest of the four metals offered for the official Lexington centennial medal of 1875, and Hibler and Kappen list it as HK-1004, a proof under Julian CM-24, sold at thirty dollars apiece. The observance ran over April 18 and 19 on the town common: a memorial service in the town hall the first evening, then a 100-gun salute and speeches in a tent holding 7,000, a parade, and a banquet in a second tent seating 3,500. Concord was asked to join but held its own centennial instead, and the HK account treats the two towns' celebrations as the first of a run of anniversaries that culminated in the 1876 Centennial Exposition at Philadelphia. The Minute Man town seal and the seven-line reverse match the silver HK-16, bronze HK-17 and white metal HK-18. Gold, 38 mm.
