Description

Proof three dollar pattern struck in 1874, early in the metric coinage movement when Mint Director Henry Linderman and Chief Engraver William Barber began exploring designs for internationally compatible denominations. This proof striking in gold is part of the three-dollar gold piece design studies for this unusual denomination introduced in 1854 conducted at the Philadelphia Mint under Chief Engraver William Barber.
