Description
The 1873 Closed 3 Three Dollar was struck at the Philadelphia Mint as a dollar in the Indian Princess Three Dollars 1854-1889 series. With a mintage of 100, this is an extremely rare issue — the highest mintage among 3 variants, accounting for 75% of the year's production. The obverse features a female figure wearing a feathered headdress, representing Liberty in the guise of a Native American princess, similar to but distinct from the gold dollar design and the reverse displays a wreath of tobacco, wheat, corn, and cotton enclosing the denomination 3 DOLLARS and date. Open 3 and Close 3 varieties exist. The Coinage Act of 1873 continued the denomination. Coined at the Philadelphia facility, the nation's original mint that has operated continuously since its 1792 founding. Estimated market value ranges from $8.2K to $67K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 5.02 grams, 20.5 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
