Description
Produced at the San Francisco Mint, the 1872 (S) Liberty Head Quarter Eagle is part of the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 series. With a mintage of 18,000, this is a scarce issue — the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 86% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. A low-mintage year; gold coins circulated primarily in the West where they were preferred over greenbacks. The San Francisco Mint, a Gold Rush-era institution, now specializes in proof and collector coinage. Estimated market value ranges from $948 to $13K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7816.
