Description
The 1872 (S) Liberty Head Eagle was struck at the San Francisco Mint as a Gold Eagle in the Liberty Head Eagles 1838-1907 series. The San Francisco Mint struck 17,300 eagles dated 1872. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST on a scroll above the eagle. Carson City, Philadelphia, and San Francisco struck eagles. CC issues are Comstock Lode-era coins. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 16.72 grams, 27 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #8665.
