Description
The 1872 Proof Quarter Eagle Pattern - J-1230 is a proof quarter eagle pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873) series. Its obverse is William Barber's Liberty head facing left, with LIBERTY on the headband and the hair falling behind, and its reverse an eagle standing on a shield like that of his Amazonian silver patterns, which is why the set is also called Amazonian; USPatterns.com notes that it is the only uniform design ever made for all six gold denominations. USPatterns.com reports a single set struck in gold, about a dozen sets in copper (three of them apparently gilt) and three in aluminum. The set is unique in gold. It is struck in gold with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com lists it as unique. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1372, Adams-Woodin 1229 and Taxay EP883. Cataloged as PCGS #61502.
