Description
Closing the extraordinary fifty-one-variety 1871 dollar pattern series, J-1163 was struck in copper-nickel, adding a fourth composition to the final design concept. As the last entry in the most prolific single-year dollar pattern program in American history, J-1163 represents both a conclusion and a promise: the design work of 1871 established the foundation upon which the final Trade Dollar design would be built in 1872 and adopted in 1873.
