1870 Proof Quarter Eagle Pattern - J-1028
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
Completing the quarter eagle trio with a nickel striking, J-1028 pairs the Coronet Liberty Head obverse and eagle reverse with the hardest metal in the 1870 pattern repertoire. Nickel's resistance to deformation under striking pressure produced exceptionally sharp details in the eagle's feathers and the portrait's hair curls, though the metal's stubbornness also increased die wear and required greater press force than gold. This nickel quarter eagle is among the rarest pieces in the gold denomination section of the 1870 program, with only a handful of examples survive.
