Description

A copper striking from the regular half eagle dies that received a gold wash or gilt finish, this variant of J-1032 was created to simulate the appearance of a gold half eagle without using actual gold. The gilding process applied a thin layer of gold to the copper surface, producing a piece that could deceive the casual observer into believing it was struck in solid gold. Gilt patterns served a specific purpose in the Mint's distribution program: they allowed officials and collectors to evaluate the visual impact of a design in its intended gold-toned appearance while using far less expensive metal, making them among the most visually deceptive pieces in the 1870 pattern series.

Rarity Notes

R-7. Extremely rare, approximately 4-12 examples survive. High R-7 per some references.
