Description
A copper die trial with a reeded edge, J-993 was struck to evaluate the condition and performance of the half dollar pattern dies rather than to propose a specific design for adoption. Die trials served a purely technical purpose at the Mint: they allowed engravers to inspect the depth and clarity of the die's devices, check for cracks or defects, and assess whether the dies remained serviceable after extended use. Copper was the preferred metal for such tests because it was inexpensive and its softness revealed die detail with exceptional fidelity.
