Description

The plain-edge aluminum companion to J-991, this transitional half dollar striking shares its die combination but omits edge reeding. Plain-edge die trials from 1870 are inherently scarce because the Mint produced fewer of them than their reeded counterparts, and collectors of the period generally preferred reeded-edge specimens that more closely resembled genuine coinage. The survival of both edge variants for this particular die combination indicates that at least one contemporary collector deliberately acquired a complete pair.

Rarity Notes

R-8. Very rare, approximately 3 or fewer examples known.
