Description

The plain-edge aluminum companion to J-985, this pattern carries Barber's modified Seated Liberty obverse paired with the STANDARD agricultural wreath reverse. Among the most visually striking pieces in the 1870 half dollar pattern series, aluminum impressions of the modified Seated Liberty obverse display an almost ghostly brilliance on their silvery-white surfaces. The design's combination of a traditional Liberty figure with a modernized headpiece and hairstyle bridged the gap between the classical Seated Liberty coins of the past and the entirely new Liberty Head portraits that dominated the rest of the 1870 pattern program.
