Description

Introducing the fifth and final obverse variant in this batch, J-985 features Barber's modified Seated Liberty design showing Liberty facing right and wearing a plain tiara inscribed LIBERTY, with her hair gathered and tied in a bun. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arches above and IN GOD WE TRUST appears on a banner below. This obverse represents Barber's attempt to update the iconic Seated Liberty motif for the proposed Standard Silver coinage while retaining visual continuity with the familiar design Americans had used since the late 1830s. Struck in aluminum with a reeded edge.
