Description
Struck in silver with a reeded edge, J-981 represents the most production-ready version of the open-wreath coronet obverse paired with the regular With Motto eagle reverse. This die combination in silver most closely approximates what a reformed half dollar might actually have looked like in everyday commerce: a clean, elegant Liberty portrait on the front and a reassuringly familiar eagle on the back. Heritage Auctions and Stack's Bowers have both handled examples, confirming this as one of the more frequently encountered varieties in the fourth group.
