Description

Completing the third group, J-978 renders the open-wreath coronet obverse and STANDARD wreath reverse in copper with a plain edge. As the final piece in a six-variety set exploring this particular die marriage, J-978 rounds out the systematic matrix that Barber and Linderman applied across the entire 1870 pattern program. The plain edge on a copper planchet produces the most medallion-like presentation in the group, devoid of both the silver heft and the edge reeding that would have signaled this piece as conventional coinage.
