1870 Proof Half Dollar Pattern - J-976
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Sharing the open-wreath coronet obverse and STANDARD wreath reverse with J-975, this silver pattern substitutes a plain edge for the reeded one. Plain-edge silver half dollar patterns in the third group are among the scarcest in the entire 1870 Standard Silver series, with J-976 rated at the highest rarity level. The smooth edge gives this hefty silver planchet a medallion-like feel that distinguishes it immediately from contemporary circulating half dollars, all of which carried reeded edges as standard practice.
