Description
Struck in aluminum from the regular eagle dies, J-1036 presents the ten dollar gold piece's Coronet Liberty Head and eagle reverse in a metal that would have produced a strikingly lightweight coin. An aluminum eagle-sized piece weighing barely 3 grams would have been a remarkable curiosity to nineteenth-century collectors accustomed to the satisfying 16.7-gram heft of a gold eagle. The large planchet area amplifies aluminum's visual characteristics, with the metal's bright, silvery surface providing stark contrast to the golden warmth that defined the eagle denomination in commerce.
