1870 Proof Eagle Pattern - J-1035, Gilt
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This gilt copper striking from the regular eagle dies received a thin gold wash to replicate the visual appearance of a ten dollar gold coin. The gilt finish on a coin of this diameter creates a particularly convincing simulation, as the larger surface area allows the gold layer to catch light in ways closely resembling solid gold. Gilt eagle patterns were produced for the same evaluative purpose as their half eagle counterparts: to demonstrate how the design looked in its intended golden hue without the expense of striking in actual gold. The subtle warmth of the gilt surface over copper's base produces a color subtly distinct from pure gold, detectable only by experienced numismatists.
