The 1870 Proof Cent Pattern - J-788 is a proof cent pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Standard Silver Patterns (1870) series. It was struck from the regular 1870 Indian Head cent dies. USPatterns.com regards the 1870 off-metal strikings from regular dies as pieces made for sale to collectors in complete sets, cent through double eagle, rather than true die trials. USPatterns.com confirms two aluminum examples, one of them from the Brenner 1914 ANS exhibit and the Brand collection. It is struck in aluminum with a plain edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-875 and Adams-Woodin 1074. Cataloged as PCGS #61031.
