1869 Proof Double Eagle Pattern - J-786
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
The third and final double eagle pattern variety for 1869, J-786 concludes the Reconstruction-era experimental program for America's flagship gold denomination. The three-variety series (with two gilt variants) represents the most intensive single-year design study for the double eagle during the entire 1866-1869 period. The Liberty Head double eagle would continue with modifications through 1907 before Saint-Gaudens' celebrated redesign introduced what many consider the most beautiful American coin ever produced. The 1869 patterns document the beginning of the artistic conversation that would eventually lead to that masterpiece.
