1869 Proof Double Eagle Pattern - J-784, Gilt
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
A gilt version of J-784, this proof double eagle pattern was struck on a base metal planchet and gold-plated. The double eagle's high gold content made gilt substitutes particularly economical for design evaluation. Each actual gold double eagle pattern contained nearly an ounce of gold, making the use of gilt planchets an important cost-saving measure that allowed broader experimentation without excessive precious metal consumption.
