This proof dollar pattern continues the 1869 series with its third variety. The silver dollar pattern program in 1869 explored designs related to the upcoming Trade Dollar concept, as discussions about creating a coin specifically designed for Asian markets were gaining momentum. Some 1869 dollar patterns may represent early experiments with the heavier-weight, commercial-oriented design that would eventually become the Trade Dollar in 1873.
