Description
The 1869 Proof Dime Pattern - J-717a is a proof dime pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Reconstruction Era Patterns (1866-1869) series. Its obverse is the dateless Seated Liberty die, and its reverse reads SIL. NIC. COP. above a line and the date, naming the silver-nickel-copper alloy promoted in 1869 as Koulz's alloy; David Cassel argues that the name is a garbling of the French chemist Ruolz. Mint officer W. E. DuBois judged the metal totally unfit for coinage. It can be told from J-716 only by metallurgical analysis; at least half a dozen are known. It is struck in nickel with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-798. Cataloged as PCGS #60944.
