Description
The 1869 Proof Dime Pattern - J-716 is a proof dime pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Reconstruction Era Patterns (1866-1869) series. Its obverse is the dateless Seated Liberty die, and its reverse reads SIL. NIC. COP. above a line and the date, naming the silver-nickel-copper alloy promoted in 1869 as Koulz's alloy; David Cassel argues that the name is a garbling of the French chemist Ruolz. Mint officer W. E. DuBois judged the metal totally unfit for coinage. Over a dozen are known, including examples in the Smithsonian and the American Numismatic Society. It is struck in an alloy of silver, nickel and copper with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-6. It is also catalogued as Pollock-795, Adams-Woodin 795 and Taxay EP582.
