Description
The 1869 Proof Dime Pattern - J-714 is a proof dime pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Reconstruction Era Patterns (1866-1869) series. Its obverse is the Seated Liberty die without a date, and its plain reverse reads SIL. 9 over NIC. 1 above a line and the date 1869, naming a proposed alloy of 90% silver and 10% nickel. Earlier editions of Judd listed it as silver-nickel, but every example David Cassel tested was ordinary coin nickel of 75% copper and 25% nickel. It is struck in nickel with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-6. It is also catalogued as Pollock-793, Adams-Woodin 792 and Taxay EP579. Cataloged as PCGS #60939.
