Description
Gilt bronze on a planchet 5.2 mm thick sets HK-12b apart from the ordinary bronze and silver strikings of the Pacific Railway medal, which marks the meeting of the Central Pacific and Union Pacific at Promontory, Utah, on May 10, 1869. The design is William Barber's: on one side President Grant in bare-headed profile with "The oceans united by railway" beneath, on the other a mountain landscape and a train between the Atlantic and the Pacific, with a ribbon reading "Every mountain shall be made low." The medal belongs to the Philadelphia Mint's own medal series as Miscellaneous No. 13 and was first struck in bronze in 1870. Hibler and Kappen caution that matte yellow-bronze restrikes were made in the twentieth century. The diameter is 45 mm, as for HK-12 and HK-12a.
