Description
Ulysses S. Grant's bare-headed profile, facing right, fills the obverse of the Mint medal for the completion of the first transcontinental railroad, under the legend "Presidency of U. S. Grant." Below a line across the field the medal states its subject: "The oceans united by railway May 10, 1869." On that day the Central Pacific and Union Pacific lines met at Promontory, in a Utah that was still a territory, created in September 1850 and more than 25 years away from statehood. The 41st Congress authorized the medal; William Barber designed and engraved it, and it was first struck in bronze at the Philadelphia Mint in 1870 as part of the Mint's medal series, Miscellaneous No. 13. HK-12 is bronze, 45 mm, Julian CM-39; silver proofs are HK-12a.
