Description

This proof three-dollar gold pattern showcases the proposed placement of IN GOD WE TRUST on Longacre's distinctive Indian Princess three-dollar design. The three-dollar denomination occupied a unique niche in American coinage — introduced in 1854 with a lower authorized mintage than other gold denominations, it was always comparatively scarce in circulation. The obverse displays the Indian Princess wearing an elaborate feathered headdress with LIBERTY inscribed on the band and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border. The reverse wreath of agricultural products enclosing THREE DOLLARS now bears the national motto. As Chief Engraver, Longacre was effectively modifying his own earlier creation, and the motto integration reflects his mature understanding of design balance on this distinctive coin.
