The 1866 Proof Three Dollar Pattern - J-543 is a proof three-dollar gold pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Reconstruction Era Patterns (1866-1869) series. It was struck from the regular 1866 three-dollar gold dies, so its design matches the regular coin; only the metal differs. Judd lists it in nickel with a reeded edge, and USPatterns.com rates it R-7. Judd classes it as a die trial, a strike from regular dies in a metal other than the coin's own. USPatterns.com counts about nine or ten, one of them gilt, and notes some may be mint errors on Shield nickel planchets. It is catalogued as Judd-543, Pollock-608, Adams-Woodin 531.
