Description

This variant of the 1866 half dollar pattern presents an alternative configuration of the WITH MOTTO design. The half dollar had been the largest silver coin in widespread daily commerce since the dollar's effective withdrawal from domestic circulation (most silver dollars were exported or melted for their bullion value after 1850). Adding IN GOD WE TRUST to such a prominent denomination carried both symbolic and practical weight — the motto would be seen and handled by millions of Americans in everyday transactions. J-539 differs from J-538 in its die characteristics or composition, representing a parallel experimental approach to the same design challenge. These proof patterns were typically struck in quantities of 15-30 pieces, distributed among Mint officials, Congressional leaders, and well-connected collectors.
