Description

Among the most visually impressive of the 1866 motto patterns, this proof half dollar presents the IN GOD WE TRUST addition on one of the largest silver denominations in regular circulation. The half dollar's 30.6mm diameter provided ample space for the motto ribbon above the heraldic eagle on the reverse, creating a balanced and authoritative design. The obverse retains the Seated Liberty figure that had graced the half dollar since 1839. This pattern documents the moment when the half dollar — a workhorse denomination representing serious purchasing power in the 1860s — received the religious motto that would remain on American coinage into the twenty-first century. The proof striking exhibits deep mirror fields and frosted devices that highlight the interplay between Gobrecht's original Liberty figure and Longacre's motto addition.
