Description
A gilt impression of the 1866 double eagle pattern, struck on a base-metal planchet with a thin gold wash to approximate the appearance of a genuine gold piece. Creating gilt versions of gold denomination patterns served both practical and aesthetic purposes — they allowed the Mint to produce additional specimens for evaluation without the considerable expense of striking in gold (a single double eagle contained approximately $20 worth of gold, a substantial sum in 1866 currency). The gilt finish on this coin simulates the rich yellow hue of a gold double eagle while revealing the base metal substrate at areas of wear or handling. Pattern collectors particularly prize gilt specimens for their rarity and the visual drama of the gold-over-base-metal surface, which develops a distinctive patina over time. This piece bears the same WITH MOTTO design as the gold J-549.
