Description
The 1866 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle was struck at the Philadelphia Mint as a Gold Quarter Eagle in the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 series. With a mintage of 3,080, this is an extremely rare issue — the scarcer of two mint variants, with 7% of total production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" added to the reverse. Coined at the Philadelphia facility, the nation's original mint that has operated continuously since its 1792 founding. Estimated market value ranges from $2.0K to $35K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7803.
