Description
The 1866 Liberty Gold Dollar was struck at the Philadelphia Mint as a Gold Dollar in the Large Indian Princess Head Gold Dollars 1856-1889 series. With a mintage of 7,100, this is a scarce issue — the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 100% of production. The obverse features a female figure wearing a feathered headdress, representing Liberty in the guise of a Native American princess with a larger, more detailed head design and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing the denomination 1 DOLLAR. Post-war recovery. Production slightly increased but gold dollars were increasingly irrelevant to commerce. Coined at the Philadelphia facility, the nation's original mint that has operated continuously since its 1792 founding. Estimated market value ranges from $697 to $3.2K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 1.7 grams, 14.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
