Description
A Gold Quarter Eagle from the San Francisco Mint, the 1865 (S) Liberty Head Quarter Eagle belongs to the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 series. With a mintage of 23,376, this is a scarce issue — the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 94% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Final year of the Civil War. Quarter eagle production remained at Philadelphia and San Francisco. San Francisco's storied mint, born of the California Gold Rush, has evolved into the primary producer of U.S. proof coins. Estimated market value ranges from $1.3K to $22K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7802.
