Description
A Gold Quarter Eagle from the San Francisco Mint, the 1865 (S) Liberty Head Quarter Eagle belongs to the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 series. The San Francisco Mint struck 23,376 quarter eagles dated 1865. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons. Final year of the Civil War. Quarter eagle production remained at Philadelphia and San Francisco. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7802.
