Description
The 1865 (S) Liberty Head Eagle - 865/Inverted 186, struck at the San Francisco Mint, is part of the Liberty Head Eagles 1838-1907 collection. San Francisco struck 16,700 eagles dated 1865 in all; how many came from the 865/Inverted 186 die is not recorded. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons. Civil War ended. Production at Philadelphia and San Francisco as Reconstruction began. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 16.72 grams, 27 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #8643.
