Description
This gilt copper specimen of Judd-439 simulates the appearance of a gold quarter eagle by applying a thin layer of gold to the copper base. The gilt finish allows evaluation of the With Motto design as it would appear on the actual gold coin, with the warm yellow surface closely approximating the color and reflectivity of a gold striking. Gilt copper patterns were standard practice at the Philadelphia Mint for gold denomination patterns, providing a middle ground between the unrepresentative appearance of plain copper and the high cost of actual gold strikings.
Rarity Notes
Rarity-7 to R-8. Gilt versions are typically scarcer than plain copper. Estimated 3-5 specimens known.
