1865 Proof Eagle Pattern - J-449
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Judd-449, Pollock-517, is the first of three 1865 proof eagle patterns testing the With Motto design on the ten-dollar gold denomination. These patterns extend the eagle motto work begun with J-297-J-298 (1862) and J-349-J-352 (1863). The gold eagle was one of the most important denominations for international trade, and the motto's appearance needed to maintain the coin's recognizability. Struck in copper as a substitute for gold, with proof finish.
