Description
The 1864 (S) Liberty Head Double Eagle, struck at the San Francisco Mint, is part of the Liberty Head Double Eagles 1849-1907 collection. With a mintage of 793,660, this is a less common issue — the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 80% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM surrounded by a glory of rays. Gold premiums peaked during the Civil War. Double eagles were primary export gold coins. San Francisco's storied mint, born of the California Gold Rush, has evolved into the primary producer of U.S. proof coins. Estimated market value ranges from $5.0K to $57K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 33.4 grams, 34 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #8942.
