The 1864 California Fractional Gold Half Dollar (BG-1015a) is a silver die trial struck from dies intended for gold coinage. Die trials such as this one were struck in base metal or silver from dies made for the gold pieces of Breen and Gillio's second period, when jewelers made fractional pieces mostly as souvenirs and charms. PCGS lists it as a die trial in silver under BG-1015a. Catalogue number: BG-1015a. PCGS number 10962.
