(1863) Civil War Patriotic Token F-58/439a, INDIAN HEAD
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Civil War patriotic token combining Fuld obverse die 58, an Indian Head design modeled after James B. Longacre's federal cent, the most popular obverse family for patriotic tokens because its resemblance to official coinage helped these privately struck pieces gain public acceptance, with reverse die 439 bearing a design featuring "INDIAN HEAD". As the second-largest obverse die family, Indian Head designs exploited the public's familiarity with the federal cent. The closer a token resembled genuine federal coinage, the more readily it circulated as emergency currency. This copper striking represents the standard composition for patriotic tokens. Die sinkers chose copper because its properties β malleability, durability, and cent-like appearance β made it ideal for mass-produced emergency currency. Produced in 1863. The Fuld catalog documents over 10,000 distinct die combinations for patriotic tokens, making this one of the most complex series in all of American numismatics. Many die pairings are known from only a handful of surviving specimens.
